It has been more than 27 years since Ed and Sheila
Varner first became associated with Mattatall Funeral
Home and so it was with tremendous pride that they
announced in the fall of 2004 that they had purchased
the funeral home from the corporate group for whom they
had managed the business. Having built their personal
and professional lives in Truro, they were delighted to
be investing in the future of the community. When word
got out that the firm was once again locally owned, the
response from the community was extremely generous and
gratifying. Ed, Sheila and staff are thrilled with the
recent addition to the funeral home name. The Mattatall
Family has given superior service to Truro and
surrounding areas and we are so pleased to join our name
with theirs.
While running a funeral home doesn’t permit a lot of
leisure time, Ed and Sheila do manage to involve
themselves in the community. They attend Brunswick
Street United Church, where Sheila is actively involved
and is a member of the choir. Ed is also an associate
member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 26.
Funeral Director Peter Surette, a long time friend and
colleague of Ed and Sheila, joined Mattatall Funeral
Home in 1988. Peter is a key member of our staff and our
community. He is an Executive Member of the Royal
Canadian Legion, Branch 26, and is also active in the
Ham Radio community.
In November 2007, Ed and Sheila’s son, Bruce, came to join the team. Having worked for a corporately owned funeral home, Bruce jumped at the chance to come back and work in his hometown alongside his parents and their staff.
